Oilskin is 100% cotton or canvas treated with a mixture of linseed oil and paraffin wax.  This treatment gives the fabric a weatherproof but breathable character and prolongs the life of the product.

Oilskin was used in the early days before waterproof synthetics were produced and is still used today in outdoor camping equipment and clothing.   There is a famous Australian company that sells oilskin products, in particular rain coats.

The proper care and storage will prolong the life of your oilskin product.  Your product should be stored in a ventilated area and not in a damp cupboard or plastic storage box/bag.

To clean your product, gently brush off dirt with a brush or sponge with cold water and then dry in the shade.  Do not place your bag in a washing machine or clothes dryer.  There are products on the market to treat and reproof your oilskin bag/product.

While the product is new, it will feel a little greasy and some residue of oil and wax could rub off  onto other surfaces and fabric.   Beach sand will also stick to your bag while it is new, however over time the oilskin will naturally dry out.  Your bag will develop a beautiful weathered leathery look with loads of character and get better with age like an old Driza Bone  coat.
